Tastebud Change: Part II

So as I said in my previous tastebud post, when you drop all dairy and most processed things, your tastebuds change. The example I used in my other post was the coconut rice that I had never been able to taste the coconut in before. Now it hits me like a coconut bomb. I love it.

Well, the other night, I had a moment of weakness. My husband and I went to a restaurant we normally don’t go to. And we ordered our favourite dish from there, which is cactus cut potatoes. There is no dairy on the actual potatoes, but there is in the dip that I used to love that comes with them.

I avoided it at first, but we had waited way too long to eat, and I had a moment of weakness. I dipped a potato in. Sometimes it sucks to be honest, but I do want to be transparent here. But here’s the funny part. It tasted awful. It tasted nothing like what I remembered. And it was’t just the batch. My husband said it was the same as always. I never thought the day would come where I didn’t like dairy… Oh my!

It’s amazing what your body can and will do. I won’t be craving that dip again anytime soon.

Tastebud Success!

One of the things I had researched about people who became vegans was that their tastebuds changed. And not just changed, but you’ll be able to taste and smell things you haven’t been able to before. If I’m going to be completely honest, I must say that I thought this was a bit of a joke… I mean how can your diet dictate how well you can “smell” or “taste” things?! It just sounds ridiculous…

But… I stand corrected.

My husband and I have been going to this stir fry place for a couple years. Though my stir fry mix is always with veggies now instead of meat, I still always ordered coconut rice with my stir fry. I used to have no clue why they even called it coconut rice because it tasted so much like plain, white rice to me. But I always got it just because it sounded better than the alternatives.

Last week (post month being vegan), we went back and I got a veggie stir fry with coconut rice like always. But I kid you not, I had definite coconut rice! I tasted the coconut! Oh my goodness.

Not planned, but we went back the very next day, so it was definitely a new batch of rice, but it tasted like coconut! My tastebuds have seriously awakened! Many things taste saltier than they used to, sweeter than they used to, and just better. This is so neat!

I Don’t Know Why I’ve Never Tried This Before!

So as many of you know, one of my biggest inspirations for my vegan lifestyle is Freelee the Banana Girl. I have watched so many of her videos because it is so important to see the raw vegan lifestyle at work. And especially since my husband doesn’t support my raw vegan lifestyle (yet), I need to have some sense of support around me. Her videos are amazing (minus the sometimes swearing).

So I was inspired to make her Datorade yesterday. I took my bag of deglet noor dates and my coconut sugar with me to school. I blended up about 20 dates, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of coconut sugar, and the rest filled with water. OH MY GOODNESS! It is SO GOOD! I actually ended up making a second batch later. So in love ❤ I really don’t know why I didn’t make it before!
